OBITUARIES John J. Niebuuer Dies At 80
John Joseph Niebauer of 10 Wiltshire Avenue, Larkspur, a veteran of the campaign against insurrectionists in the Philippine Islands, died in a local hospital yesterday after a long illness. He was 80.
Niebauer, who grew up on a Michigan farm, enlisted in the Army at the age of 19.
After one month of training at Jefferson Barracks, M0., he was shipped to Manila and as= signed to the 14th Cavalry, with which he saw action against the Moros in Mindanao. During his three-year enlistment, he rose from private to sergeant. Later, while stationed at the Presidio of Monterey, Niebauer was among the soldiers rushed to San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake t.o guard against looting and help restore order.
Niebauer served 36 years with American Import Co. in San Francisco. The last 20 years he was secretary-treasurer. He retired in 1959.
He lived off and on in Marin County, moving here for the last time nine years ago.
He kept careful rainfall figures at his home in the Chevy Chase portion of Larkspur and faithfully reported his readings tot the Independent-Journal.
He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Church Holy Name Society, De La Salle Council 52 of the Young Men’s Institute and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
He is survived by his Wife, Iola B. Niebauer; a son, Dr. John J. Niebauer of San Francisco; five brothers, Andrew and Louis Niebauer, both of Chicago; Joseph Niebauer of South Bend, Ind., and Leo and Ben Niebauer, both of Michigan; two sisters. Mrs. Mary Prall and Mrs. Ella Coillet, both of Michigan, and two grandchildren. Funeral cortege will leave
Chapel of the Hills, San Anselmo, at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow and go to St. Patrick’s Church, Larkspur, where a Requiem Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Burial
will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, San Rafael. The rosary Will be recited at the mortuary at 8 p.m. today. The family prefers contributions to St. Mary’s Cathedral Building Fund, San Francisco.
John J. Niebauer of 10 Wiltshire avenue, Larkspur, will be honored, by his San Francisco business associates tonight on his retirement from the American Import C0. after 36 years.
Niebauer and his wife, Iola, will be guests of the firm’s executives and their wives at a dinner in the Fairmont Hotel.
He went to work for the company in 1923 as office, credit and personnel manager. Since 1939 he has been secretary treasurer of the firm
Established in San Francisco in 1894, American Import C0. has sales offices throughout the United States and Canada and buying offices in Europe and the Far East.
Niebauer will take a two month vacation before his retirement becomes official Oct. 1. He plans to do “lots of fishing” during the two months. His plans after that are indefinite, he said.
He has one son, Dr. John J. Niebauer Jr., San Francisco orthopedic surgeon.
